At Spirit Lake (Devil Lake aka Lac Ste Anne) this year, forty thousand whitefish are taken by the Metis in five days and frozen for shipment to Fort Edmonton. This Metis village is growing into a major town.
Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) and his guide Michel Nipissing visited the Iroquois and Chippewas (Nipissing) in Jasper Valley, Father Lacombe fell ill. Michel Nipissing said: Father, I am afraid that you will die here. Then what will become of me? Everyone will say that I mistreated you, perhaps even murdered you. Give me a paper so that I can prove that I was good to you.

April: Hamlin is trading in opposition to the Company at Lac La Biche. In this same month Lake St. Anns Metis Freemen with 21 horses crossing the Saskatchewan River below Fort Edmonton on their way to Red River carrying away with them 500 martens together with other valuable furs to be sold there.

October: News reached Fort Edmonton (Alberta) that the Lac Ste Anne (Alberta) Metis are returning from Red River with Red River carts laden with supplies. They had been six months on the round trip.

It was noted that 30 acres were under cultivation below Fort Edmonton, (Alberta). A big windmill is located behind Fort Edmonton for grinding flour.
Near Victoria Metis Settlement, (Alberta) the Whitefish Lake Indians and Metis are growing potatoes, turnips and barley. By 1865, 30 Metis families had settled in the area. This settlement was first established 1839 or earlier.
About 800 ounces of gold from the Fraser River (B.C.) reached California this year, despite the efforts of the Hudson Bay Company to control the trade in gold.
January 7: Old man Lacombe a freeman born about 1777 died on the prairies. He had married a Cree woman who had a number of children, boys and girls, one of whom was Corps Rouge, Omikkoiyawe (Red Skin) who lives among the Bloods.

March: About 700 Blackfoot arrived Fort Edmonton to trade.
March 31: The John Palliser expedition to chart the west is commissioned and included: Dr. James Hector, physician and Geologist, Eugene Bourgeau a French Botanist and Thomas Blakiston a surveyor. They wintered at Fort Carlton and the following year at Fort Edmonton. Palliser had written while at Fort Edmonton, "It is great fun to see the black looks of the hostile divines (missionaries). I understand that, sometimes, hostilities have proceeded further than mere looks." The clerics bitter hostilities towards each other and their different viewpoints on Christianity raised doubts in the natives' minds about the tenable and sincerity of its advocates. Palliser was also doubtful of the value of the missionary's activities. This, however is the same man who proposed the madcap scheme of training 50,000 poor boys of London for indenture (slavery) to a Canadian rural existence. Palliser himself departed to the United States this winter leaving Dr. James Hector in charge of the expedition.
May 1: The Cree arrived to trade Fort Edmonton. Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) dispatched a number of Metis with their carts, on his behalf, for the Red River Settlement. He was to travel via the Hudson Bay barges to the same destination.

December 30: The Palliser expedition, with Dr. James Hector, arrived at Fort Edmonton, (I)-John Palliser (1817-1887) returned to Montreal through Minnesota to file his report to London. Some suggest the expedition wintered Fort Carlton. Palliser writing about the prairie turnip said, the root is very dry and almost tasteless, and even when boiled for a great length of time does not become soft, and is at best but insipid, unnutritious trash. The French Canadian voyagers however dubbed it 'pomme de prairie'.
