Frederick Rowland (Rowand?), Metis b-1854 N.W.T. married about 1877 N.W.T. Adakine Metis b-1856 N.W.T. living Fort Edmonton 1891.

John Rowand (1787-1854) died in May at Fort Pitt where his Metis son, James Rowand, was Chief Trader. John Rowand, in his fury, cursed Baptiste Paul, a Fort Edmonton employee who was in a fight. Some says John Rowand (1787-1854) was foaming at the mouth in his fury when he suddenly dropped dead. His wish was to be buried next to his kin in Montreal. W.S. Gladestone, a carpenter at Fort Edmonton wrote there is not a man at Fort Edmonton or Fort Pitt that done any crying for Rowand, everybody is glad. James Rowand swore he would kill Baptiste Paul for causing his father's death. Some believe James Rowand hired one of his men to shoot Paul with the excuse that he thought he was a bear in a thicket.

James Sinclair of Red River led an expedition from the north end of the valley to the lower and upper Kananaskis Lake country (Alberta).

(II)-William Sinclair, Metis. (1794-1868) son (I)-William Sinclair of Scotland and Margaret Nahoway Cree is Chief Factor, Saskatchewan District and is stationed Fort Edmonton (Alberta).

Bishop Tache founded the mission of Lac La Biche, and this was the man who claimed there were few points in this vast territory capable of cultivation and he would prefer to see the country remain as it is than to see the changes that would likely take place.

Yet another Choleria epidemic swept Canada.

The Hudson Bay Company issued coins and called them beavers, a large one the size of a silver dollar, a half beaver, the size of the 1/2 dollar and so on down to the 1/8th beaver the side of a dime.

August: Father Vital J. Grandin (1929-1902) arrived Red River and is assigned to Lac La Biche.

September 1, 1854: Lac La Biche (Alberta) death Joseph Cardinal, b-1756, Quebec, married 1794 Rose Cree; 2nd marriage 1798 Lizette Maskegan a Native.

December: Rocky Mountain House reported that the Cree had set fire to the plains, there were no buffalo near there. This is likely so that the Hudson Bay Company would have to trade goods for meat.

James Doty a United States Indian Agent is the first non-native to record seeing Writing on Stone, Alberta.

Samuel Whitford, b-1855 Red River married about 1884 Alberta Mary J Metis b-1865 Alberta living Saddle Lake, Alberta 1901.

Rev. Thomas Woolsey (1834-1911) arrived Fort Edmonton and made this his base of operation until 1859 when George Simpson advised him that the Fort was not his station, although he admitted that it was occupied by the Romanists. Romanists are those who follow the Roman Empire beliefs and values. Thomas Woolsey said, "I now consider myself a stranger to this Fort, although Chief Trader William J. Christie b-1825, and his lady always welcomed me when I returned from the wandering buffalo eaters." William J. Christie b-1825, was a very large fat man and his Metis daughter would become Mrs. Malcolm Groat. He claims to have encouraged the Cree and Stony to locate at Pigeon Lake or Red Headed Woodpecker Lake as the natives called it. James Doty, a United States Government Agent ,on September 3, 1855, discovered the Indian Writings on the Milk River now called 'Writing on Stone Provincial Park'. The Blackfoot told Doty that, "White men had many years ago written upon the rocks." Others claim they did not know who had written on the rock because it was before their time in the area. Henry Steinhauer (1818-1884), an Ojibwa Methodist Missionary, preached the first service at Whitefish Lake, Alberta.

Two Protestant missionaries arrived Fort Edmonton (Alberta), Thomas Woolsey (1834-1911) who settled at Smoky Lake and Henry Steinhauer (1818-1884) aka Sowengisik an Ojibwa who settled at Whitefish Lake.

January: Fort Edmonton received a 36 dog train of frozen buffalo meat.

February: Maskepatoon a Cree sent word to Fort Edmonton they had buffalo meat to trade if someone was to visit them.

February 15: Fort Edmonton, birth, Michel Callio, Metis, son Michel Callio, Metis, born October 1, 1823, Lesser Slave Lake (Alberta), Marie Savard (1828-1869); married 1882, St. Albert, Mary Jane Donald, b-1865 Red River.

May: Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) with his guide Alexis Cardinal departed Lac Ste Anne for the Peace River Country. They encountered a Metis population on the shores of Small Slave Lake. Colin Fraser was in command of the trading post at this location. Lacombe was on his way to Fort Dunvegan.

May 6: Fort Edmonton, marriage William J. Shanks Gladstone Sr. to Harriet LeBlamc, b-1835 Fort Edmonton daughter Louis Leblanc Sr. and Angelique Vallee, b-1820 born Fort Edmonton.

May 19: Lac Ste Anne, birth, Magloire Belcourt, Metis son Jean Baptiste Belcourt Sr. b-1820 (Alberta) and Cecile Callihoo, b-1834, Peace River, Alberta; 1st married Nancy Ignace; 2nd married 1879, Lac Ste Anne, Constance Letendre aka Mooschwan b-1860, Lac Ste Anne.

July 26: St. Albert (Alberta), birth Julien Savard, son Alexandre Savard, b-1831, Slave Lake and Therese Bisson, b-1830, Peace River; married, November 15, 1875, St. Alberta (Alberta), Sophie St. Arnaud, b-1861, Fort Pitt (Saskatchewan), died 1877 daughter Benjamin St. Arnaud, b-1830, Slave Lake and Sophie Bruneau.

August: Fort Edmonton (Alberta), birth, Lucille Gladu, Metis; married 1871, Fort Edmonton, George Kipling, Metis b-1850 Red River.

September: Lacombe returned to L:ac Ste Anne.

September 20: Reverend Thomas Woolsey (1834-1911), a Wesleyan arrived Fort Edmonton and the Reverend Henry B. Steinhauer (1818-1884), a full blood Ojibwa Indian, and Wesleyan was making his way to Lac La Biche.

October: Three men from Jasper house reached Fort Edmonton with fifty half wild horses.

November: St. Albert (Alberta) birth Felix Nipissing or Shawan son Thomas Shawan Nepissing, b-1818 and Rosaire Gladu; 1st married 1878, Lesser Slave Lake (Alberta) Mary Henri or Masquego, d-1887; 2nd marriage June 1889, Lesser Slave lake (Alberta), Emilia Nisotsasi, Metis.

November 10: Lac Ste Anne (Alberta), birth, Jean Felix Doron Gladu son John Dorion Gladu, b-1836, Slave Lake, and Jane Collin, b-1838, B.C.; married, 1875, Lac Ste Anne (Alberta), Cecil Belcourt, Metis, born January 17, 1858, Lac Ste Anne, (Alberta), daughter, Jean Baptiste Belcourt Sr. b-1820 and Cecile Callihoo, Metis, b-1834, Peace River, (Alberta).

The fall: Father Remas is assigned to Lac Ste Anne under Father Lacombe and Fathers Tissot and Maisonneuve are sent to Lac La Biche to service the Athabasca and Mackenzie Rivers. They were ordered to build a more imposing mission several miles west of the town and to cut a road via the future St. Paul des Metis to intersect the road from Fort Pitt to Fort Edmonton..
