James Rowland (Rowand?), Metis b-1844 N.W.T. possible son John Rowand? (1787-1854); married about 1867 Julia Metis b-1844 N.W.T., living Fort Edmonton 1891.

Paul Kane (1810-1871), who was commissioned by Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) to do twelve canvases of Indian life, reported the buffalo were as far as the eye could see and so numerous that they impeded their journey to Fort Edmonton and filled the air with dust, almost to suffocation. Paul Kane wintered at Fort Edmonton until 1846 and described Fort Edmonton: A large establishment, some forty to fifty men with their wives and children, making about one hundred and thirty people who lived within the pickets of the fort. Some historians suggest only 80 Metis are being supported out of Fort Edmonton this year. Kane, however, goes on to say that their employment is in building boats for the trade, sawing timber; which is rafted down river from ninety miles higher up, cutting popular for fire-wood; as eight hundred cords are consumed each winter. The women are all, without exception, either squaws or half-breed. They make moccasins and clothing for the men and convert dried meat into pemmican. He also described the great icehouse which contained seven to eight hundred buffalo carcasses. Kane painted the Cree Metis Cunnewabum; meaning one that looks at the stars and is struck with her beauty.

Paul Kane (1810-1871) described Jasper House as three miserable log huts. Its sole purpose was to provide horses for mountain crossings. Colin Fraser, his Cree wife and nine children were at the post.

Louis Pelletier (or Campbell) Sr., Metis, born July 15, 1829, up the North Saskatchewan River in Rocky Mountains son Pierriche Pelletier (or Pierre Campbell) married 1845 Fort Jasper Marie Karaconti.

Father de Smet (Smef) (1801-1873), of the Oregon Mission, came over White Man's Pass this year on his way to Fort Augustus (Fort Edmonton). When he passed through Jasper House Colin Fraser was there to great him.

Father Pierre-Jean de Smet (Smef) (1801-1873), visited Rocky Mountain House, on the North Fork (North Saskatchewan River).

A Belgian born Jesuit, Father Pierre-Jean de Smet (Smef) (1801-1873), working the Missouri country, visited Fort Augustas (Fort Edmonton), and Lac Ste Anne a.k.a. Devils Lake. He wintered Fort Augustus.

The French Oblates of Mary Immaculate are requested to aid the few scattered secular priests in the North West Territories.

The first confirmed Europeans in Kananaskis Country, west of Calgary, Alberta, were James Sinclair and15 families with their livestock, whom he was leading over the mountains to settle in Washington, U.S.A.

March 23: Lac Ste Anne, baptism Jean Baptiste Beaudry, born January 1845 son Joseph Beaudry and Louise Ladoucer.

May 2: Upper Fort des Prairies aka Fort Edmonton, (Edmonton, Alberta), marriage, Peter Calder son James Calder and Inconnue Lindsay; married Isabelle Lussier, Metis, b-1827 daughter Francois Lussair, Metis, b-1799 and Louise Bruneau, Metis.

Floria Fraser, born October 1845, Jasper House daughter Colin Fraser and Nancy Anne Beaudry, b-1815 Fort Carlton (Saskatchewan) married September 18, 1867, Fort Edmonton James Gullion, b-1838 Scotland.

Peter Erasmus (1833-1931) a Ojibwa Metis, interpreter, guide, who could speak 9 languages married 1865 Whitefish Lake (Alberta) Charlotte Jackson d-1880 a Metis.

The (I)-Reverend James Evans (1803-1846) was charged with the shooting of Thomas Hassell, his Chipewyan interpreter and of improper relations with Indian women, connected with the missions. The charges were not sustained but he departed for England and promptly dropped dead at Keelby in Lincolnshire.

Father Pierre-Jean de Smet (Smef) (1801-1873), a Jesuit from St. Louis on the Mississippi River, departed Fort Augustus (Fort Edmonton) on the North Fork (North Saskatchewan River) for Fort Jasper, then on to Fort Vancouver. At Fort Jasper he encountered Colin Fraser who had been at that post from before 1838.

Rev, Henry Steinhauer aka Sowengisik a full blood Ojibwa married 1846 Jessie Joyful Seeseeb Mamanuwartum and spent the rest of their lives in Alberta..

Fathers Lafleche and Tache established a mission at Ile a la Crosse and next year serviced Reindeer Lake and Fort Chipewyan.

Wheat is grown at Fort Edmonton (Alberta) on a trial basis.

Paul Kane departed Fort Edmonton to Fort Assiniboine with the Oregon bound brigade and Colin Fraser of Jasper House accompanied the party. Colin spoke of the days he piped Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) into innumerable posts.

Father Jean Baptiste Thibault, the Oblate at Fort Edmonton relished in the fact he had won 36 Indians from the Methodists of Reverend Rundle.

Fort Benton is built by the The American Fur Company about 60 Km down the Missouri River from present day Great Falls, Manitoba. This Fort would become a major trading point for Alberta, including Fort Edmonton, Fort Calgary, Fort McLeod and Fort Hamilton later called Fort Whoop-up near Lethbridge (Alberta).

June: Mackenzie River, marriage, (I)-Alexander Hunter Murrey (1819-1874) to Anne Campbell (1803-1907) daughter of Colin Campbell. Their first daughter was named Helen b-1848. Second a daughter named Elizabeth b-1849. Third Margaret b-1851. Fourth Anne Flora b-1852. Also son James, another son and daughter. They settled in Fort Yukon a.k.a. Youcon. Anne's only companion was Kutchin her Indian servant woman who nursed her own son until he was almost ten years of age. Anne said two or three years was the normal period.

July 31: Devil's Lake (Lac Ste Anne, Alberta), birth, Pierre Gray, Metis, son, Joseph Gray, Metis b-1809, Jasper House and Susanne Callihoo L'Iraquoiose, b-1824; married 1868, Marie Lorme alias Delorme, Metis, b-1842 Devil's Lake (Lac Ste Anne, Alberta) daughter Augustine Lorme alias Delorme and Isabelle Karaconti.
