William Connolly (1787-1849) who joined the N.W.C. in 1801 and became a partner by 1818. He married 1803, Rat River, Suzanne Cree, d-1862 and had 6 children. The Roman Catholic Church committed a horrific crime by tell him his marriage was invalid, a barbarous union to an infidel. It mattered not that he was married 28 years and had fathered 6 children. As a result he put his infidel wife away in Red River and took a second Christian wife Julia Woolrich and had more children. In 1867 Justice Samuel Cornwallis Monk ruled that the Country Marriage was valid and the marriage to Julia Woolrich was bigamous, therefore making her children bastards. Unfortunately this was not an isolated case.

A Peigan trading post is constructed at the headwaters of the Bow River, Alberta and was abandoned in 1834. Some contend white men (Metis?) settled this year near Morley not far from old Bow Fort.

Seventy-eight pack horses are needed to take supplies across the portage to Fort Assiniboine and other northern points. The herds of horses needed to support this portage are pastured at Big Lake (St. Albert) and Lac La Nonne (Alberta), guarded by one or two Metis. These Metis are also employed for the long trip to York Factory. J.E. Harriott built a post on the north side of the Bow River, east of Canmore. After two years it closed, as the Piegan objected to the intrusion of their lands. Harriott moved to Rocky Mountain House and remained in charge until 1841. This post usually closed each summer.

A cholera epidemic swept Canada and 60% of seriously infected patients died this year. This influenza epidemic began in Asia in 1830, spread to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malay peninsula and back into Asia. It then spread to Russia, spreading westward eventually arriving North America.

Inspector Brisebois, in 1875, noted the ruin of an old fort by the mouth of the Elbow River which he believed to be built by an American Fur Company trader about 1833.

Fort Edmonton (Alberta) reported that they were supporting 18 Metis men, 28 women and 71 children. This would be in the fort proper not the surrounding area.

Smallpox again swept through the prairies.
