Jasper Hawse built Jasper House at the north end of Brule Lake for the HBC. The NWC had established their first Jasper trading place in 1801.

Fort Pitt was established this year on the North Saskatchewan River between Fort Callton and Fort Edmonton.

It was estimated that 10,000 (likely exaggerated) buffalo carcasses lay mired in a single ford of the Saskatchewan River contaminating the air for many miles.

The flooding of Fort Edmonton this year follows the previous flooding of 1825. Rowand (1787-1854) moved the fort from the Rosedale flats to higher ground, below where the legislature building now stands. Fort Edmonton was three hundred by two hundred feet, with the palisade of logs twenty feet high. Rowand (1787-1854) built the Big House, that most called Rowand's Folly, which is thirty feet wide, eighty feet long and three stories high. Its interior is decorated with some of the weirdest color patterns ever seen. Colin Fraser (1807-1867), the kilted highlander, was the Governors piper and would later become postmaster.

Eustas (Eustace) Barard (Birard), Metis b-1831 Fort Edmonton, N.W.T. son Louis Birard and Catherine Niyhes, married about 1862 N.W.T. Margaret Metis b-1841 N.W.T., living Fort Edmonton 1891.

Jimmy Jock Bird (1785-1892) a Metis, is the chief interpreter for the mission out of Fort Edmonton to the headwaters of the Missouri River, were he built a trading post at the Junction of the Yellowstone and the Missouri Rivers and proceeded to trade with the United States fur traders.

John J. Richard Hardisty, the Metis red head, as some would call him, is born 1831 at Moose Factory (place where white man repaired cart wheel with the jaw bone of the moose). He would be married September 20, 1865, to Elizabeth Victoria at Victoria Metis Settlement, (Alberta) located eight miles south of Smoky Lake that was a Methodist Mission. Richard would become Chief Factor Fort Edmonton 1870 to 1883. Brother Joseph would be factor Hawaii and W. L. Hardisty at MacKenzie River, and brother Thomas would work part time for the company. Richard Hardisty would declare himself a half-breed in the April, 1874 census. However he is first recorded as white, then stroked out and changed to Metis.
